English: The Yami (Tao) people who live in the island of Lanyu are great at utilizing oceanic resources. To Yami's people, building a boat is a holy mission and a significant aspiration in life. Yami boats have a unique design and a colorful appearance, which represent important cultural symbols. It takes several years to finish a boat－from the process of looking for the right materials and lumbering up to the piecing together of materials and polishing. During this process, rituals are held to pray to the spirits of the boats and to their ancestors. |
