美式足球（英語：American Football）是一隻1997年在美國伊利諾伊州厄巴納成立的大學生獨立搖滾樂隊，由結他手、低音結他手兼主唱邁克·金塞拉（英語：Mike Kinsella）（Mike Kinsella）、結他手史蒂夫·霍姆斯（Steve Holmes）以及鼓手兼小號手史蒂夫·拉莫斯（Steve Lamos）組成，由於成員畢業而在2000年解散。儘管樂隊一開始壽命不長，但他們的首張同名專輯《American Football》（1999）成為了後來最受好評的Emo和數學搖滾專輯之一。

樂隊於2014年重組，金塞拉的表弟內特·金塞拉（Nate Kinsella）加入樂隊進行演出活動。這一期間，樂隊又發行了兩張同名專輯《American Football》（2016）以及《American Football》（2019）。拉莫斯曾於2021年至2023年因為大學的工作而短暫離開樂隊。

邁克·金塞拉（英語：Mike Kinsella）和史蒂夫·霍姆斯是同在伊利諾伊州惠靈惠靈高中（英語：Wheeling High School）就讀的室友，兩人都對樂器演奏和搖滾樂有着濃烈的興趣，金塞拉是學生樂隊「Cap'n Jazz（英語：Cap'n Jazz）」的鼓手，霍姆斯在很多學生樂隊擔任過結他手。[1][2]

高中畢業後，金塞拉和霍姆斯升入UIUC，繼續進行着課餘音樂活動。[3]1997年，20歲的金塞拉曾與史蒂夫·拉莫斯、大衛·約翰遜（David Johnson）和艾倫·約翰遜（Allen Johnson）一起以「The One Up Downstairs」的名義演出，金塞拉擔任主唱。他們以這個名字錄製了三首歌曲，當時新成立的伊利諾伊州獨立唱片發行公司Polyvinyl Records（英語：Polyvinyl Record Co.）原本打算將這三首歌曲作為一張7英寸單曲唱片在發行。可是樂隊在發行前就解散了，單曲發行也被擱置。直到2006年，這三首歌才以樂隊同名EP《The One Up Downstairs》的名義被數字發行，又在2009年以7英寸唱片的形式被Polyvinyl Records發行。[4]「The One Up Downstairs」解散後，金塞拉和霍姆斯開始與霍姆斯的大學室友史蒂夫·拉莫斯合作，三人一起組建了美式足球（英語：American Football）樂隊，隊名來源於拉莫斯女友看到的一張寫着「快來看美式足球，我們有着全世界工資開得最高的運動員。」（Come see American Football, the most overpaid athletes in the world.）的海報。[5][3]

在與Polyvinyl Records的合作下，樂隊於1998年發行了首張同名EP（英語：American Football (EP)），又在1999年發行了首張同名專輯（英語：American Football (1999 album)）。[6] 樂隊在專輯中的錄音有金塞拉演奏的貝斯，但EP里沒有。[7][8]在完整版專輯發行一年後，《American Football》成為了一個錄音室項目。[9] 專輯在當地取得了小範圍人氣，但樂隊因為成員大學畢業決定在不同城市發展而解散。[10]隨着Emo的發展，這張專輯越來越知名，並在互聯網上給樂隊帶來了一些邪典追捧者。[6][8][9]

樂隊解散後，拉莫斯搬到了科羅拉多，在科羅拉多大學博爾德分校英語系擔任教授。[11][10]拉莫斯和霍姆斯後來一起組建了樂隊「The Geese」。[10]金塞拉則為了組建一個由他主導創作的新樂隊而成立了「Owen（英語：Owen (musician)）」[12]。2004年，金塞拉錄製了《Never Meant》的原聲音樂版，分別由Owen和Rutabega發行。[9][12]同年，《American Football》專輯首次被壓制在黑膠唱片上[13]，並由Polyvinyl發行。[14]
